Is there a cultural life in Puerto Vallarta?
Sometimes it happens that when a city is greatly recognized for being good at something, such as partying; or have been blessed with a lot of something else like say, natural beauty, it’s generally understood that it can’t be good at anything else. That’s exactly the case of the area of Puerto Vallarta & Riviera Nayarit, which is internationally renowned for having some of the best beaches in the world and which nightlife as well, legendary. So, people assume that a town like this, can’t have a vibrant cultural life… and they are wrong!
Part of what makes Puerto Vallarta so alluring is that, in contrast with other Mexican beach destinations like Cancun or Cabo, it wasn’t specifically built to be a tourist hotspot. Puerto Vallarta is a town with history and a dynamic city that is much more than just a long stretch of hotels by the beach. Downtown Vallarta is an area filled with art galleries responsible for the organization of the traditional Art Walk every Wednesday, when locals and visitors alike walk around the cobblestone streets of this quaint part of town, admiring art, enjoy drinks and meeting new people.
Contemporary art, on its part, is having a boom in Puerto Vallarta for the last few years. It has become an attractive place for artists and curators who have moved into the city in recent years, infusing new energy into an already interesting contemporary art scene in Vallarta.
The inauguration of Teatro Vallarta in 2010 provided the city with a world-class stage that has brought acclaimed artists and shows from all over the world. In 2012, Act II Entertainment opened Stages, a multi-stage cultural center that mixes up theater and cabaret performances in a refreshing modern style.
The Riviera Nayarit is a younger destination still in search of its own identity, but little picturesque villages like Sayulita and San Pancho have quite an interesting cultural scene, and we can’t forget about Nuevo Vallarta, a destination that will jump ahead of the line once the construction of the new Cirque du Soleil complex gets finished.
